It was the headquarters of the Community House and many families from Aix built their own chapel here.
Monseigneur Marini, the Archevêque of Glandève and the King Rene's confessor, was the most famous Magister. The road "Rue de la Masse" was named after him up until the French Revolution.

The most famous of it's guests was Martin Luther, a member of the Brotherhood, or Confrérie, of the Augustins, who stayed there for quite some time after his return from Rome, shattered by his excommunication pronounced against him by the Pope.
After the French Revolution, the convent was sold as a national spirit of the ancient convent, and retrieved it's original name.
The Hotel des Augustins can at last perpetuate it's history, heritage, and split up entirely. In 1892, the Hotel was created in the church part of the Convent. It was named the "Hotel du Louvre" until 1950, and the "Hotel de l'Europe".
It was entirely restored and refurnished in 1984 to be in line with the spirit of the ancient convent, and retrieved it's original name. The Hotel des Augustins can at last perpetuate it's history. |
